FROM
STUDENT TO EMPLOYEE: HOW TO ENTER INTO THE JOB MARKET
The common term that plays pivotal role in job search and
finding one is networking. Yes networking, for the rule has always been that
students or individuals should have lots of friends and acquaintances,
particularly those in the working sector. The chances for securing a job is
quite a surety especially when the friend or acquaintance knows your talent, skill or level of education- he or
she will recommend you to the boss, who when convinced enough can call you for
an interview. So, go on networking!
Now,
follow these job search strategies:
·
* Utilize campus career centres
·
*Join social networking sites (like LinkedIn)
·
*Practice interviewing, get feedback and revise
your interview strategy
·
*Talk to your favourite professor, lecturer or
teacher (for career guidance)
·
*Develop an elevator pitch to use at career fairs-
a brief information about yourself, what you do, your skills, education and
what you can offer the industry
·
*Research companies and put a short list together
·
*Find who the ‘key’ contacts are at companies where
you have an interest and reach out to them
·
*Leverage your internship into a full- time
position
Your
CV/Resume’ & Cover Letter
·
*Don’t put your religion, marital status, age,
ethnicity, sex, unless the company specify or request for it
·
*The maximum page should be between 2- 3 pages with
much focus on your strengths and qualifications. Lengthy CV’s are boring. So,
just list your achievements, duties, and responsibilities
·
*Avoid too much familiar and first personal
pronouns
Before
& During the Interview
-
What you
must do:
·
*Use suitable outfits
·
*Take care about your body odour
·
*Get to interview place early
·
*Relax, be smart and confident
·
*Smile, make eye contact with interviewers
·
*Present convincing statements
·
*Show enthusiasm and good attitude
·
*Be honest- tell what you can do
·
*Remember to ask a question
Now,
never ask (for):
·
*The salary to earn (unless you’re asked)
·
*Promotion
·
*Holidays
·
*Don’t exaggerate
·
*Don’t be like a rehearsed person, but rather feel free
and be yourself
After the interview avoid unnecessary phone calls to the
company. Send emails (normally once a
month).
I wish you well in your job pursuit.
